THIS WEEKEND'S CONTESTS: Last weekend the RedHawks lost one game in the final minute, and another in penalty strokes as they watched their record drop to 1-4. Miami has one contest this week at Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m., as it gears up for Mid-American Conference action beginning Sept. 27 at Kent State.

The Buckeyes came into Oxford, Ohio, last year and defeated the Red and White 3-1 on the Miami Turf Field. Scoring Miami's lone goal in the game was Cheryl Iozzi. OSU owns an 18-4-1 all-time record versus the RedHawks, and has won the last 11 contests dating back to Miami's last win on Oct. 12, 1988.

MIAMI'S LAST TIME OUT: Two losses came in dramatic fashion last weekend for the RedHawks in Boone, N.C. Appalachian State bested the Red and White 2-1 on Friday, Sept. 13 when it scored in the final minute of play to take the decision. Two days later the RedHawks played through regulation and two overtime periods against the Davidson Wildcats without scoring a goal, only to be defeated in the tie-breaking penalty stroke competition.

ASU took a 1-0 lead into the second half against the RedHawks before freshman Jessica Saling (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) put a crossing pass from classmate Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) into the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Saling's second of the season while Bortnik recorded her first collegiate point.

Miami continued to dominate on the offensive end of the field but failed to score another goal in the second period. On the other end, the Mountaineers made the most of their only opportunity when Nora Brookes scored her second goal of the game with 59 seconds remaining to give ASU the 2-1 win.

With one day off in between games, the Red and White returned to ASU's field on Sunday, Sept. 15 to take on Davidson. Both teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of 70 minutes and torrential downpours. Sophomore Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) continued her great play in net for the RedHawks as she stopped a career-high 10 shots against the Wildcats. Orr's play was not enough for Miami as Davidson won the contest in the tie-breaking penalty stroke competition after two more scoreless overtime periods.

A LONG BEND IN THE ROAD: The RedHawks are spending the first half of their season on the road, playing seven of their first eight games away from Oxford, Ohio. In fact, after its season opening loss against Indiana, Miami does not return to its home field until the second week of Mid-American Conference action on Oct. 4-5 against Ball State and Central Michigan, respectively.

The RedHawks continue their road stretch this weekend when they play at Ohio State on Sept. 22, and then the following weekend at Kent State and Ohio on Sept. 27-28.

ORR-GANIZING THE DEFENSE: Sophomore goalie Kerri Orr is quickly making a name for herself as one of the better goaltenders in the MAC. After limited action in her first season, Orr has already recorded her first collegiate shutout and is pacing the conference with a 1.47 goals against average and .758 save percentage.

With seven saves against UMBC on Sept. 8, Orr recorded her first career shutout as the RedHawks won the game 1-0 and ended their 21-game losing streak. Despite not collecting a victory against Davidson, her 10-save performance set a new career high.

Orr's play in net has been a main reason that Miami's defense is leading the MAC in goals against average, as well as allowing the second fewest goals to Ball State's five.

MAC TOURNAMENT COMING TO OXFORD IN 2002: This year the MAC Tournament is being hosted by Miami on Nov. 8-10. The conference tournament has not been hosted by the RedHawks since the 1983 season when they fell to Northern Illinois, 2-1, in the championship contest.
