OXFORD, Ohio - At 3-1 early in the 2008 season, the Miami University field hockey team will play two pivotal games in Mount Pleasant, Mich. on Friday and Saturday.

The RedHawks will open the weekend with their Mid-American Conference opener against host Central Michigan on Friday at 2 p.m.

Miami University head field hockey coach Jill Reeve commented on the Chippewas.

"It sounds like Central Michigan has developed a strong squad this year," said Reeve. "We are going to have to bring our A-game to get the results we desire."

Central Michigan is 0-2 this season but their two losses came against No. 7 Syracuse, 8-3, and Stanford, 3-2, who also has received national votes, this past weekend.

The Chippewas are led by Brooke Sihota who has two goals and Kim Erasmus who has three assists.

Reeve also is looking for two RedHawks in particular to keep their strong early-season play going.

"I will be looking for our captains, Danielle Gaynor and Elizabeth Gilroy, to lead the way this weekend." Reeve continued, "They have both been a consistent force in our first four games and the team will need their steady and strong play in our next two matches."

Saturday's 1 p.m. game in Mount Pleasant will pit Miami against Colgate.

The Colgate Red Raiders are 3-1 this season, losing their only match so far to Syracuse. Senior defender Maddie Watrobski is currently second on the school's list of all-time career assists, earning her 20th against Rider. Senior midfielder Lauren Carey is tied for ninth on Colgate's all-time points list with 59.

Reeve hopes that the offensive firepower Miami has shown through the first four games, outscoring opponents 20-5, will also continue.

"It has been exciting to score so many goals in our first few opportunities. I hope we'll be able to continue that trend while we make adjustments with our defensive game."

Gilroy has led Miami statistically through four games, scoring a team-high three goals and dishing out two assists. She was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for her two goals and one assist in last Saturday's 8-1 win over Sacred Heart in Evanston, Ill.

Six RedHawks have two goals on the season, giving Miami plenty of scoring options in the early season.

Freshman Abbey Huck has been the starter in goal, while junior Kelsey Dean and senior Megan Stengel have each contributed quality minutes in cage.
