THIS WEEKEND'S CONTESTS: After picking up their first win of the season last week against UMBC, the RedHawks hit the road again this weekend as they travel to Boone, N.C., to play Appalachian State on Friday, Sept.13 and Davidson on Sunday, Sept. 15. Miami's 1-0 victory over UMBC was its first win since defeating Lehigh 2-1 on Sept. 1, 2001.

The Red and White seek revenge on Appalachian State at 8 p.m. on Friday night after suffering a 3-2 overtime loss to the Mountaineers in last year's final regular-season game. Miami leads the all-time series against ASU with a 6-2 count, while it restores its series with Davidson on Sunday at 1 p.m. The RedHawks own a 3-0 advantage over Davidson with their last meeting being a 3-0 Miami win on Oct. 14, 1996.

MIAMI'S LAST TIME OUT: Last weekend started off slowly as the Red and White dropped a tough 2-0 decision to the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, Sept. 7. However, the RedHawks responded on Sunday against UMBC with a 1-0 blanking of the Retrievers. The win not only upped Miami's record to 1-2, but also ended a 21-game losing streak.

Sophomore goalie Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) deserved most of the credit for the RedHawks' victory as she stopped seven Retrievers' shots to collect her first career shutout. Orr made five saves in the first half, which included several diving stops to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

Miami took the lead for good at 19:28 in the second period when senior Sarah Clarke (West Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater) found the back of the net on a successful penalty corner. Both junior Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Chrisopher's) and sophomore stickstop Gillian Lindsay (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) were credited with assists on Clarke's game-winning goal.

A LONG BEND IN THE ROAD: The RedHawks are spending the first half of their season on the road, playing seven of their first eight games away from Oxford, Ohio. In fact, after the Indiana loss Miami does not return to its home field until the second week of Mid-American Conference action on Oct. 4-5 against Ball State and Central Michigan, respectively.

The RedHawks continue their road stretch next weekend when they play at Ohio State on Sept. 22, and then the following weekend at Kent State and Ohio on Sept. 27-28.

FIRST YEARS MAKING AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Two weekends ago against Indiana seven freshmen stepped onto the Miami Turf Field in a competitive setting for the first time in their RedHawk careers. Since then, three freshmen have emerged as regulars in the starting lineup, while two have been regular subs off the bench for coach Fesperman.

Freshmen Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), Marnie Pickering (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Jessica Saling (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) have started all three games this season, while Jackie Bowman (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) and Keri von Kalinowski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) have appeared in all three of those contests. After patiently waiting to be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse, classmates Katy Koob (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Nicole Reese (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificant) are ready to get in their first collegiate game.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Both Appalachian State and the RedHawks enter Friday night's contest with 1-2 records. In similar fashion to Miami, ASU got its first win of the year last Sunday by defeating St. Francis (Pa.), 6-1. The Mountaineers had previously dropped their season opener to James Madison, 6-0, and their next game to American, 3-0.

Pacing the Mountaineers is Emily Walls with four goals. Walls has accounted for 50 percent of ASU's offense, while taking 23 of 53 Mountaineers' shots on net. ASU has used both Amy Sarno and Kate Ryno between the pipes this season.

Davidson has a 2-1 record through its first three games. The Wildcats received wins over Radford and St. Francis (Pa.), but were unable to stay undefeated when American defeated them 2-1 last Sunday.

Jane-Garnet Ishon and Amanda Strickland have each scored two goals for the Wildcats. Registering Davidson's fifth goal was Agnes Batemen. Starting all 210 minutes in net for the Wildcats is Sarah Nolan who maintains a 1.00 goals against average. Nolan has one shutout this season.

MAC TOURNAMENT COMING TO OXFORD IN 2002: This year the MAC Tournament is being hosted by Miami on Nov. 8-10. The conference tournament has not been hosted by the RedHawks since the 1983 season when they fell to Northern Illinois, 2-1, in the championship contest.
