THIS WEEKEND'S CONTESTS: Head coach Lil Fesperman and the Miami field hockey team travel to the east coast this weekend as they square off against Georgetown on Saturday, Sept. 7, and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday, Sept. 8. Due to Georgetown's turf field not being ready for competition, the RedHawks are scheduled to play both contests at UMBC Stadium.
At 1 p.m. on Saturday the Red and White face the Hoyas for just the second time in program history. Miami defeated the Hoyas 4-0 on Oct. 15, 1994 in their one previous meeting. The contest between Miami and UMBC on Sunday will be the first meeting between the two schools.
MIAMI'S LAST TIME OUT: After finishing up a grueling preseason with high hopes the RedHawks got off to a good start on Saturday, Aug. 31 when they took an early 1-0 lead in the first half against Indiana. Momentum shifted, however, for the RedHawks in the second half as the Hoosiers rattled off four goals to win the contest, 4-1, and collect their first victory against the RedHawks.
Registering her first career goal in the first half was freshman Jessica Saling (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart). Saling collected her first goal after the Indiana goalkeeper unsuccessfully cleared a RedHawks' shot from the circle. Credited with her first career assist on Saling's goal was classmate Keri von Kalinowski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch).
HOMEWARD BOUND: For the first time in their playing careers at Miami seniors Julie Nelson (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) and Katie Palisoul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) are competing in their high school stomping grounds. Nelson is serving as a captain for the second straight year while Palisoul returned to the Red and White this season after studying abroad last year.
A BEND IN THE ROAD: The RedHawks are spent the first half of their season on the road, playing seven of their first eight games away from Oxford, Ohio. In fact, after the Indiana loss Miami doesn't return to its home field until the second week of Mid-American Conference action on Oct. 4-5 against Ball State and Central Michigan, respectively.
After this trip Miami has a week of practice before it sets on the road to Boone, N.C. to play Appalachian State and Davidson on Sept. 13 and Sept. 15. The RedHawks then play at Ohio State on Sept. 22, and at Kent State and Ohio on Sept. 27-28.
MAC TOURNAMENT COMING TO OXFORD IN 2002: This year the MAC Tournament is being hosted by Miami on Nov. 8-10. The conference tournament has not been hosted by the RedHawks since the 1983 season when they fell to Northern Illinois, 2-1, in the championship contest.
