Feb. 12, 2002

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University head field hockey coach Lil Fesperman announced today the signing of five incoming freshmen to National Letters of Intent. After a sub-par offensive year in 2001, Fesperman brings in four forwards to bolster the attack as well as one back.

Keri von Kalinowski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) commits to the RedHawks after leading her high school team to a 23-3 record in 2001. A back and defensive-minded player, Kalinowski has been a participant in the United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA) Futures Elite Program and also has attended the National Field Hockey Festival. Her defensive skills and winning attitude have earned her Miami's Chrissy Taylor Defensive Scholarship. Kalinowski is planning to pursue a business degree.

"Keri has good speed, quick feet and great low-body position," Fesperman says. "I am excited that she has chosen to attend Miami and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see her contribute right away on the defensive end."

After Hudson High School finished its 2001 season with a near-perfect 19-1 season, Fesperman went out and picked up some of the talent. Marnie Pickering (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) have chosen to become RedHawks after successful high school careers. Both have participated in the USFHA Futures Elite Program and the National Field Hockey Festival. Pickering, an all-Ohio selection as a senior, plans to be a business/marketing major, while Bortnik is interested in becoming a zoology major.

"Marnie has a very quick first step and is the consummate team player," Fesperman says. "She is a very determined and inspired player, and comes from a very successful program at Hudson. Her teammate and now classmate at Miami, Lindi, has always wanted to be a RedHawk. Lindi has a great attitude and is a scoring threat every time she steps on the field just because of her quickness."

Miami's remaining two signees both hail from Louisville, Ky. Jessica Saling (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) enters the class of 2006 at Miami after leading her high school team to the Kentucky state championship. An all-county, all-region and all-state selection, Saling will compete in Holland at the end of March. She plans to focus her studies on a graphic design degree. Joining Saling from the Blue Grass State is Jackie Bowman (Louisville, Ky./Assumption). Like Saling, Bowman participated in both the USFHA Futures Elite Program and National Field Hockey Festival.

"Jackie is a fast player with plenty of experience, and not to mention very exciting to watch," Fesperman says. "Jessica has good speed and makes up for any weaknesses with her feisty play on the field.

"This is an outstanding class of student-athletes," Fesperman says. "Any one of these five players could have an immediate impact on the program. I am very excited to work with them and our returning players in getting back to our previous level of excellence."
