OXFORD, Ohio - On an afternoon which began with the honoring of Miami University's (2-18) five seniors, the Appalachian State (7-11) field hockey team stole the show with a 3-2 double overtime victory. Miami goalkeeper's senior Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) and freshman Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) kept the RedHawks in the contest making 10 and nine saves, respectively.

Appalachian State built a 2-0 edge with a goal in each period of regulation. Sophomore Jessica Burkhardt got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at 12:37 in the first half. Burkhardt scored after gaining position of a loose ball in front of the Miami goal. Burkhardt also scored ASU's second goal on a penalty corner after receiving the ball on the left post from Emily Walls and stick-stop Mandi Martin. The Mountaineers now held a 2-0 advantage with 13:21 remaining in the contest.

Freshman Megan Wiegand (Encinitas, Calif./LaCosta Canyon) narrowed the ASU gap to one with her second goal of the season on a penalty stroke at 5:35 in the second period. Wiegand provided the game-tying heroics just 2:25 later by deflecting junior Sarah Clarke's (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater) past the ASU goalkeeper. Wiegand's second goal of the contest and third of the season was unique considering Clarke's hit originated from midfield.

The contest remained knotted at two apiece through the remainder of regulation and one 15-minute overtime period of seven-on-seven play. Both teams had several scoring opportunities including a game saving stop by ASU goalkeeper Malia Swieconek at 9:04 in the first OT on a penalty stroke attempt by Wiegand.

The Mountaineers put the game to bed with a field goal at 9:02 in the second overtime period. After a scramble in front of the Miami net, Christina Settle banged the game-winner home for the victory.

Appalachian State held the advantage in shots, 30-14, and penalty corners, 12-8.

The RedHawks wrap-up the regular season with a 2-18 overall record after opening the schedule with two victories over Indiana and Lehigh. Miami will play next weekend in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament against Louisville on Friday, Nov. 2, at 2:30 p.m. in Louisville, Ky.
