OXFORD, Ohio - Amid swirling winds and near-freezing temperatures, Miami's field hockey team lost, 4-0, to No. 14 Louisville on Friday afternoon at the Miami Turf Field. Emerging from the break with a 1-0 lead, Louisville scored three times in the second half despite taking just four shots in the final 35:00.
The Cardinals (14-4, 7-3 Mid-American) got on the board first when Susan Sattazahn settled a penalty corner for Kimberly Hughes, who slammed it by senior RedHawk netminder Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) at the 21:17 mark of the first half.
Louisville wasted little time adding to its lead in the second half as Pip Sanders scored on a pass from Olivia Netzler less than two minutes into the frame to make it 2-0. Later in the half, Elisa Eshelman and Netzler, the Cardinals' leading scorer and the MAC's second-leading scorer, ran a well-executed two-on-one play, which led to Eshelman's sixth goal of the season and a 3-0 Louisville advantage.
Sattazahn tacked on the Cardinals' final goal with :21 left on the clock.
Miami (2-17, 0-10 MAC) was outshot 15-3 in the contest and had just three penalty corners to Louisville's 16. Vaughn made five saves, while Cardinal goaltender Christy Hershey recorded three.
The RedHawks' final contest before the MAC Tournament is 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 against Appalachian State.
