The Miami University field hockey team hung with the 13th-ranked Kent State University team for the first 34 minutes of play in the Mid-American Conference game at Miami Turf Field before falling 5-1.

Tess Meuleman scored the first goal off Helen Jerdan's direct penalty corner shot at 16:44 to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead.

Miami scored their lone goal to tie the game when sophomore forward Megan Wiegand (Encinitas, CA/LaCosta Canyon) put the shot in the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Wiegand's shot went by several defenders and Kent State goalie Jessica Creeden. The assist went to junior midfielder Shallen McClain (Ann Arbor, MI/Harbor).

The score was knotted at one goal apiece until Helen Jerdan scored on a direct penalty corner from Rebecca Rahaim and Kristen Johnson at 33:55.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, Kent State took control of the game on another goal by Helen Jerdan off a direct penalty corner from Rebecca Rahaim and Kristen Johnson at 36:04 and Andria Close got in on the action by scoring while the clock read 40:30. Fiona Brew added a late goal for the Golden Flashes at 65:05 with assists to Rebecca Rahaim and Kristen Johnson off the penalty corner.

Sophomore Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) had an excellent game, stopping 14 shots.

The RedHawks play their final home regular season game versus Ohio University at 1 p.m. at Miami Turf Field on Saturday, Oct. 19. The seniors will be honored in their final home regular season game.
