BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Miami University field hockey team defeated Big Ten foe Indiana, 3-2, Friday in non-conference action. The RedHawks improve to 10-5 overall, while the Hoosiers fall to 7-7.

“The team played outstanding today, a total team effort,” said head coach Jill Reeve. “They stuck to the game plan, had great attacking plays and quality finishes.”

After Indiana had scored three minutes earlier, Miami tied the game on a penalty corner as Katie Brightwell took the pass from Kate Snyder at the 20:46 mark. The RedHawks took a 2-1 lead seven minutes later when Elizabeth Gilroy scored from the top of the circle. Miami outshot Indiana 7-3 in the first half.

The Hoosiers tied the game at two early in the second half when a rebound from behind goalie Kelsey Dean lifted into the cage. The game remained tied for the majority of the half until Synder scored the game winner from the top right area of the circle off a pass from Mary Hull.

“There had been a timeout with nine minutes remaining,” said Reeve. “After the break our team came out determined to end this game in regulation. I’m looking forward to taking the momentum gained from this game into tomorrow’s conference match against Missouri State.”

The RedHawks outshot Indiana 15-6 for the game. Brightwell led the team with four shots, all on goal.

Miami returns to action Saturday as they host Missouri State in Mid-American Conference action. Game time is scheduled for Noon at the Miami Turf Field.
