OXFORD, Ohio - For better than 68 minutes, Miami University's field hockey team gave Central Michigan all it could handle. Unfortunately, the Chippewas scored twice within 1:06 in the first-half to hand the RedHawks a 2-0 Mid-American Conference defeat.
In an otherwise back-and-forth first half, Central Michigan's Meg Lewis broke a scoreless tie at 16:36, netting the eventual game-winner when Melissa Lazarevski found her following a Chippewa penalty corner. Before the RedHawks could regain their balance, CMU struck another rapid blow just 1:06 later, when Lazarevski, who totaled a game-high seven shots, tallied an unassisted score in heavy traffic.
Miami fought valiantly the remainder of the contest, totaling season-bests in both shots and penalty corners, but could not find its way to the back of the CMU goal. Leading the RedHawks was junior Sarah Clarke (Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater), who squeezed off five shots on the day. CMU held a narrow 13-9 edge in shots, while Miami maintained a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners. RedHawk goalkeeper Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) totaled eight saves for the Miami effort.
Miami, which dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in the MAC, returns to action
this Tuesday when it faces Ohio State. The RedHawks return to MAC play next
weekend when they travel to face national powerhouses Ohio on Friday and
Kent State on Saturday.
