OXFORD, Ohio - It was a record-making day at the Miami Field Hockey Complex today as the Miami RedHawks defeated the Missouri State Bears 9-0 to extend their winning streak to seven games. Miami is now 8-4-0 and remains undefeated in the MAC at 5-0-0 while the Bears move to 4-8-0 in 2009 and 1-3-0 in the conference.
With the win today, the RedHawks tacked on the seventh game to their winning streak. This is only the third time in program history that a team has put together a stretch of seven or more games, and the first time that a team has done so since 1981. The nine goals scored today ties the program record for the most RedHawk goals scored in a game, and is only the sixth time that it has been accomplished.
"We play together and put forth a united effort," commented Head Coach Jill Reeve about the success of the team so far. "We saw what happened when we didn't play together and we've made adjustments. Being united brings success and the wins that we've been able to string together is a direct outcome of their efforts."
Scoring early and often was the name of the game today for Miami as a well-rounded scoring effort began 11:37 into the first half with an unassisted, breakaway goal from Mary Hull. Hull was back in action only six minutes later, striking again at 17:31 when she deflected a shot from Katie Brightwell for Miami's second goal.
Keeping the Bears on their heels was Jackie Nguyen who recorded a hat-trick today. Nguyen found the net at 20:37, 47:23 and 52:16, two of which were unassisted and one off the stick of Brightwell again. Kate Snyder also scored a pair for the RedHawks today, once at 33:29 on a shot from a penalty corner and again at 41:46 unassisted from the left side.
Never letting up, Miami remained on the offensive into the final minutes of the game, with
Brittany Branco and
Christine Brightwell rounding out the scoring efforts for the Hawks with their goals off of a penalty stroke at 55:35, and unassisted at 62:47, respectively.
"Our second half was especially strong and shutting out Missouri State was significant because they have a lot of powerful scorers," said Reeve. "The next challenge is Ohio State who we haven't beaten, but this is an opportunity to stretch our wings and to show the team that we are and the level that we've reached."
Miami will be back in action this Wednesday at the Miami Field Hockey Complex at 3 p.m. as they take on No.18 Ohio State.
