OXFORD, Ohio - Sophomore Arlette van Cleeff recorded a hat trick and one assist on Saturday as the Golden Flashes defeated Miami University, 6-2, for their first Mid-American Conference field hockey win. Kent State (4-5, 1-2 MAC) outshot the RedHawks 19-7 and had four different individuals score in the victory.
Miami (2-9, 0-4 MAC) was first on the scoreboard when sophomore Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario) received a crossing pass from senior Cheryl Iozzi (Kettering, Ohio/Kettering) and slammed it into the back of the goal. Snedden's goal, her second of the season, gave the Red and White a 1-0 lead and was Miami's first score in 424:40 of action.
The RedHawks strike did not phase the Kent State offense as it tallied three goals before the end of the first stanza. Van Cleeff scored the Golden Flashes first goal at 15:48. Just 3:37 later sophomore Rebecca Rahaim scored her first goal of the season to give Kent State a 2-1 advantage. Freshman Lauren Grandinetti was credited with the assist on Rahaim's goal. Rounding out the scoring for Kent State in the first half was junior Megan Spurling with a goal at the 3:43 mark.
Van Cleeff registered her hat trick early in the second period on two successful penalty corners. Her second goal of the game was at 31:29 with an assist from junior Helen Jerdan. Jerdan assisted van Cleeff's third goal at 28:12 which gave Kent State a 5-1 lead. Van Cleeff's hat trick is the second of her career against the RedHawks.
Despite facing a 5-1 deficit Miami continued to fight and press on the offensive end of the field. The RedHawks' aggressiveness paid off when Iozzi tallied her first goal of the season with 9:26 remaining in the contest.
Kent State pushed the lead back to four at 5:38 when Grandinetti finished off a crossing pass from van Cleeff to give the Golden Flashes a 6-2 final score. The Golden Flashes also held a strong advantage in penalty corners, 11-1.
