ATHENS, Ohio - A three-game goal drought ended this afternoon for the Miami University (1-7, 0-2 Mid-American) field hockey as it fell 5-2 at Ohio University (3-4, 1-1 MAC). Putting the RedHawks on top 1-0 at halftime with her first career goal was freshman Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson).
Bortnik tallied her first career goal with the Red and White 20:22 into the first period when she received a crisp pass from senior Sarah Clarke (West Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater) inside the circle. The goal ended a 284:44 stretch without a goal and gave the RedHawks their first lead since their 1-0 win over UMBC on Sept. 8.
"First of all, this is the most intensity I've seen our team play with all season," head coach Lil Fesperman says. "Our movement off the ball was great and I really think we had them petrified going into halftime."
The Bobcats evened the game at 1-1 early in the second half when Andrea Voros connected for her fifth goal of the season, and took the lead 2-1 on Liz Holtzman's first goal of the season 9:26 into the second period.
Two Miami sophomores kept the Red and White in the game as Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra), whose been outstanding in goal for the RedHawks, stopped a penalty stroke, and Megan Wiegand (Encinitas, Calif./LaCosta Canyon) scored her first goal of the season to knot the game at 2-2. Wiegand tied the game with 15 minutes remaining on a beautiful shot into the opposite corner of the goal on a breakaway.
Ohio, however, picked up the pace in the last 12 minutes and scored three goals in a span of 2:07 to put away the RedHawks. Voros netted her second goal of the game while Liz Unger netted OU's final two goals to lead her team to the 5-2 victory.

"Even though today counts as a loss on the schedule we really never let down our pace the entire game," Fesperman says. "The team is going to have to remember how they played to today and carry that over to next weekend against Ball State and Central Michigan."
The RedHawks return home for the first time since Aug. 31 next weekend when they host Ball State on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. and Central Michigan on Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. Next weekend is the field hockey team's Parents' Weekend.
