MUNCIE, Ind. - In Mid-American Conference field hockey action, Miami University (2-8, 0-3 MAC) battled No. 14 Ohio (8-1, 2-0 MAC) into overtime before sophomore Elizabeth Holtzman knocked in her sixth goal of the season for the game-winner at the 78:50 mark. Ohio has won its last four games while the RedHawks drop their eighth straight.
Despite outshooting the RedHawks 31-5 and taking 20 penalty corners, the Bobcats were held scoreless through two full periods by a solid Miami defense. Senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) turned in one of Miami's finer performances by a netminder, registering a career-high 19 saves. Vaughn made nine saves in the first half, nine in the second and one in the extra period.
The Bobcats earned their eighth victory when junior Jenn Watt slid the ball across the face of the goal to Holtzman at 6:10 in the overtime period. Moments before, sophomore Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario) narrowly missed giving Miami its third victory when her breakaway shot sailed over the top of the goal.
Miami was awarded two penalty corners in the contest to the Bobcats' 20 corners. The Ohio goalkeeper, senior Tara Elliott, made three saves en route to her fourth shutout of 2001.
Ohio improves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the MAC while the RedHawks are now 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the league. Miami continues its homestand tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. against No. 12 Kent State.
