MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State (4-2, 1-1 MAC) scored a season-high seven goals against the Miami University (2-7, 0-2 MAC) field hockey team this afternoon, including four in the first half, at the BSU Turf Field. Six different players accounted for the Cardinals' goals, led by the two-goal performance of sophomore Afton Hess.

The RedHawks have not scored a goal in the last 341:45 and have been shut out in six of their seven losses.

"The good thing right now is that we are only 0-2 in the MAC and still have eight conference games left," says coach Lil Fesperman. "I think we'll pull it together and break it down this week with four solid days of practice. Playing at home next weekend will definitely be to our advantage."

Hess initiated BSU's scoring barrage with the only goal the Cardinals would need when she converted a direct corner play 5:27 into the contest, juniors Heather Weinhold and Monika Rhode assisted on the goal. She tallied her second goal of the game eight minutes later with assists again from Weinhold and Rhode.

Ball State managed to score two more first period goals courtesy of freshmen Dianna Lampitt and Jen Strodel. The RedHawks' woes carried over into the second stanza as Ball State tallied three more goals en route to a 7-0 final score. Recording the Cardinals' second-half goals were sophomore Kirsty Houghton, freshman Holly Frantz and junior Allison Haynes.

Miami had its only true scoring opportunity extinguished when the penalty stroke of sophomore Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario) was stopped by BSU's goalkeeper Susan McDowell with 7:09 left in the contest. The Cardinals posted a 26-8 advantage in shots and a 13-4 lead in penalty corners.

Ball State, ranked 23rd in the most recent national poll, improves to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Mid-American Conference action. The RedHawks drop their seventh straight contest, a new school record, and fall to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the MAC. Miami returns home to play Ohio on Friday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. and Kent State on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
