MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Miami University (2-6, 0-1 MAC) field hockey team dropped its sixth straight contest and Mid-American Conference opener this afternoon to Central Michigan (3-2, 1-0 MAC), 4-0. The Chippewas shut out the RedHawks on the strength of three second half goals and a 16-1 shot advantage. It is the fifth time in six games that the Miami offense has failed to score a goal.

Tarah Trottier struck first for Central Michigan with her first goal of the season at 16:01 in the first period. The Chippewas had several other scoring chances in the first 30 minutes but their offensive surges were stifled by senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn's (Davis, Calif./Davis) nine saves. Vaughn finished the game with 11 stops.

Central Michigan opened the offensive throttle in the second stanza and pummeled the Miami defense for three more goals. Meg Lewis scored CMU's second goal only 2:18 into the second half to give the Chippewas a 2-0 advantage. The Chippewas scored their third goal at 16:05 when Katrina Woznek pushed the ball past the RedHawk goalkeeper off a well-executed penalty corner. Allison Foland added an insurance goal later in the stanza to give the Chippewas the 4-0 decision.

"We played better today but our attack 40-yards and in is still not synchronized the way it should be," says coach Lil Fesperman. "Now what we have to do is regroup and take tomorrow versus Ball State as just another day."

The RedHawks have lost their last six contests and matched the longest losing streak in the program's history. The 1999 Miami field hockey team also suffered through a six-game losing streak. The RedHawks play again tomorrow at Ball State, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m seeking an end to their current streak.
