BOONE, N.C. - A goal with 59 seconds remaining in the game by Appalachian State's Nora Brookes broke a 1-1 tie and resulted in a 2-1 loss for the Miami University (1-3) field hockey team at ASU's Kidd Brewer Stadium. Scoring her second goal of the season for the RedHawks was freshman Jessica Saling (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart), and earning the assist was classmate Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson).

"It's always disappointing when you lose a game in the last minute," head coach Lil Fesperman says. "We were more aggressive and picked up the tempo in the second half, and that's why we were able to keep ASU on their heels."

The Mountaineers came out quickly in the first period and outshot the RedHawks 9-2, but were only able to squeeze one shot by the pads of sophomore goalie Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra). Orr, who made six saves in the first stanza, stopped five shots before ASU's Brookes scored her first goal at 18:03. The Red and White kept it a 1-0 game at the end of the first period despite being outshot and out cornered 3-2.

Miami came out firing in the second half and wasted little time tying the game as Saling chipped the ball into the goal from just in front of the cage at 12:32. Feeding Saling from the endline was Bortnik, who earned her first collegiate point with the assist.

The RedHawks had several scoring chances in the next 15 minutes as both sophomore Meredith Lee (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) and senior Katie Palisoul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) had shots saved by ASU's goalie Amy Sarno. However, a well-timed timeout by ASU with 5:54 remaining was all that the Mountaineers needed to shift the balance of momentum in their favor.

After going for more than 30 minutes without a penalty corner, ASU was awarded two penalty corners late in the game to put pressure on the RedHawks' defense. Brookes took advantage of a failed clear by Miami and flipped the ball over a sprawling Orr to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage with only 59 seconds left in the contest. This goal turned out to be the game-winner as ASU rode out the final minute to a 2-1 victory.

"Our players really stepped it up in the second half and did everything that (Kathleen Schanne) and I asked of them," Fesperman says. "We keep doing a little better week-to-week of putting our plan together and performing well. It's only a matter of time before it all pays off."

The RedHawks have a day off tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 14, but return to Kidd Brewer Stadium for a neutral-site contest against Davidson on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
