Sept. 9, 2001

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - In monsoon like conditions at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park the Miami (2-4) field hockey team lost its fourth straight contest of the 2001 season to the California Bears, 2-0. The Bears shut down the Miami offense to record the shut out. It was only the second time this season that the Red and White have been unable to score.

The skies opened up just before the opening pass back and both squads were forced to play through fierce wind and rain. California opened the scoring with a goal at the 29:00 mark off the stick of Nora Feddersen. The Bears would have scored more goals in the first stanza if not for Miami's senior goalkeeper, Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis), making five saves in the period.

"We played much better than we did on Friday but still not good enough," says Coach Lil Fesperman. "We have to become more aggressive in attacking the circle. No ones creating opportunities to score and when we get those opportunities we're not taking advantage of them."

California's Amber Stockstill added an insurance goal for the Bears with 19:30 remaining in the contest. The Bears dominated the game recording 18 shots and allowed zero RedHawk penalty corners while taking five of their own.

"The MAC season is fast approaching and that's what we have to prepare for," says Fesperman. "These past three games have been frustrating and somewhat confusing and it's my job to fix whatever is wrong. I'm confident that I'll do be able to do that."

On a four game losing streak, the RedHawks host Stanford for their home-opener on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. on the Miami Turf Field.
