Sept. 8, 2001

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - For the second straight game a Miami (2-3) field hockey opponent scored two first half goals to secure a victory. Dartmouth (2-0) defeated the RedHawks, 3-1, on the strength of two tallies in the first and last five minutes of the first stanza and added on insurance goal in the second 35 minutes for its second win of the 2001 season.

The Big Green were first on the scoreboard when Lauren Welsh scored an unassisted goal just 1:26 into the contest. Dartmouth's advantage was short lived when freshman Meredith Lee (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) deflected junior Sarah Clarke (Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater) into the goal to knot the game at 1-1.

At the 3:08 mark in the first period Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead into the locker room when Lauren Talbot received a pass from Rebekka Stucker and shot it past Miami's goalkeeper, senior Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis).

"We started off better than we did yesterday but never got enough shots on goal to score," says Coach Lil Fesperman. "We had a lot more scoring opportunities today but our offense just wasn't able to pull the trigger."

Welsh tallied her second goal of the contest at 18:22 in the second stanza to give Dartmouth a 3-1 advantage and silenced Miami's surging forward line. Despite recording six shots in the last 35 minutes, Miami finished the game with only three penalty corners. Vaughn played the entire 70 minutes for Miami and registered five saves.

"We played 85-yards of the field today but never finished the job in those last 15-yards in the offensive end," says Fesperman. "Right now we have the talent to win but were are not playing well enough as a team to win."

The RedHawks seek an end to their three-game losing streak tomorrow, Sept. 9, when they square off against California at 1 p.m.
