ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Two first half goals by St. Louis' (1-4) Keri Brunner was all that the Billikens needed in their 2-0 victory over the Miami field hockey team this afternoon. SLU became the first Miami (2-2) opponent to score in the first half this season. The victory is SLU's first of the season and the RedHawks have now dropped two in row.

Brunner tallied the Billikens first goal on a penalty stroke at the 22:00 mark in the first period. The penalty stroke was awarded to St. Louis after the ball was covered up by Miami's defense in front of the goal. SLU struck again at 18:00 when Heather Mattingly assisted Brunner's second goal of the contest. The Billikens dominated the first half outshooting the Red and White, 11-2.

"We were flat and very unenthusiastic on the field. Our team never got together and played right into St. Louis' hands," says Coach Lil Fesperman. "It was unusual because our team did things that I haven't seen us to yet this season. It was a surprise and there is no explanation for why we didn't gel in the first half."

Freshman goalkeeper Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) started the second stanza for the Redhawks and shut down the SLU offense making two saves. Miami outplayed the Billikens in the second period by outshooting its opponent 9-6 and receive more penalty corners, 6-3. Despite a charging RedHawk offense and several scoring opportunities, St. Louis goalkeeper Erin Linehan made five saves to collect her first shut out of the 2001 ledger.

"Our defense was confused and our offense was never in sync today," says Fesperman. "We win as a team and we lose as a team. We'll come out tomorrow and get it back together as a team."

The RedHawks play Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. Earlier today Dartmouth collected a victory by defeating California, 3-0. Miami wraps up the weekend action on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. versus the California Bears.
