SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse's two goals in the second half were more than enough offense as the Orangewomen defeated the Miami (2-1) field hockey team, 2-0, Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first period, Syracuse (2-0) tallied two goals off penalty corners to earn the victory.
"Even though Syracuse outshot us 13-0 inside the circle, it doesn't mean that we didn't play well," said Coach Lil Fesperman. "We played much better as a team and with composure today than we did yesterday, we just couldn't get enough offensive together."
The RedHawks opened the contest with a slightly different starting line-up than the day before and played Syracuse to a 0-0 tie in the first half. It was the second straight game that Miami held its opponent scoreless during the first 35 minutes of action.
"Assistant Coach K.C. Nemec and I sat down last night and decided to move some people around on the field," commented Coach Fesperman. "The girls responded well to the position changes and really stuck to our ball possession style of play."
Syracuse ended the scoring draught with its first goal at the 29:10 mark in the second period when senior forward Michelle Aronowicz scored on a penalty corner. The Orangewomen added an insurance goal later in the stanza when junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz tallied her third goal of the season on a perfectly executed penalty corner.
Senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) registered another strong game in the net for Miami, recording six saves while allowing two shots past her defense. Relieving Vaughn in goal with 2:37 remaining was freshman Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra), her first collegiate appearance between the posts.
The RedHawks return to action next weekend when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. for three regular season contests in three days. Miami will play St. Louis Univesity on Friday, September 7 (4 p.m.), Dartmouth on Saturday, September 8 (1 p.m.), and will wrap-up weekend action versus California on Sunday, September 9 (1 p.m.).
