OXFORD, Ohio - With five goals from five different RedHawks, the Miami University field hockey team rolled to a season-opening shutout win over the Davidson College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at the Miami Turf Field.

The 5-0 win gave freshman goalkeeper Abbey Huck a long list of collegiate firsts. The Emmaus, Pennsylvania product played in her first game at Miami, made her first start, got her first win in the cage as a RedHawk, and earned her first shutout, turning away four Wildcat shots.

"I was really excited, but kind of nervous," said Huck after the game. "I wasn't scared or anything because I trust the girls wholeheartedly. As a team we knew we could do it no matter who was in cage. But, I was really nervous. Starting out with a shutout is nice."

Seniors Courtney Fretz and Teja Kammler flip-flopped on the first two goals of the Miami season. Fretz scored off a Kammler assist less than a minute into the game. Just one minute later, Kammler came back with a goal with an assist from Fretz to give the hosts a two-goal cushion early on.

Senior Danielle Gaynor was the leader behind a RedHawk defense that allowed only seven shots and tallied the third goal of the game in the 25th minute.

"I saw players coming so I tried to hit it across to a tipper but it ended up going far-post, in the goal," said the San Diego native.

After the halftime break Davidson picked up the pressure, forcing Miami to play at a faster pace.

Miami head coach Jill Reeve commented on the Wildcats' halftime adjustments.

"Davidson did a really nice job in the second half of really pressurizing us and testing us. It took us a while to adjust. "

The RedHawks would eventually adjust as sisters Christine and Katie Brightwell would score the last two goals of the game. Christine scored on a breakaway in the 40th minute, while Katie took an assist from Gaynor and scored in the 68th minute. The RedHawks had the edge statistically, earning 11 penalty corners to Davidson's four. Miami had 16 shots, nine more than the Wildcats.

The hosts face the University of Richmond tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Spiders beat Ball State, 8-3, in the first game of the Miami Kick-Off Classic.

Reeve will be looking for a repeat performance from her RedHawks.

"I am looking for us tomorrow to have the same type of performance back-to-back."

"Tomorrow is going to be an interesting match. What is terrific is that we have a lot of depth. So, if someone is a little bit low on gas, we can go to our bench," Reeve concluded.

Ball State will face the Davidson in the final game tomorrow (Sunday), at 1 p.m.
