Kathleen Schanne enters her fourth season as Miami's assistant coach. Serving as the program's recruiting coordinator, Schanne's last two recruiting classes have brought 17 new faces to Oxford, including sophomore Taylor Florence, an All-MAC First Team selection in 2004, and this year's nine-member class.
Schanne was an assistant for two seasons under Lil Fesperman, the program's head coach prior to the arrival of current head coach Jill Reeve in 2004, and provided the RedHawks with an element of continuity during Reeve's first season. In 2004, the RedHawks eclipsed their combined win total from the previous three seasons, going 7-14 and advancing to the semifinal of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Prior to Miami, Schanne spent two years as a graduate assistant at Kent State University, where she received her master's degree in education. She helped guide the Golden Flashes to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, one MAC Tournament title and one MAC regular-season championship during her tenure at Kent State. During her two-year stint at KSU, she was involved in all aspects of the program, which included overseeing the academic progress of the team. She also played a role in Kent State's recruiting efforts, branching into Canada and Europe.
Before Kent State, Schanne cut her coaching teeth at the high school level, spending two seasons at both Notre Dame Academy in Villanova, Pa., and at her alma mater, Archbishop Carroll High School, in Newtown Square, Pa.
Schanne has extensive experience coaching on the national level, most recently coaching in the USA-Canada Challenge Cup held in Vancouver, B.C. She has worked with the National Futures Program for five years and was a member of the selection committee at the National Futures Championship in the summer of 2005 in Virginia Beach, Va. Also in the summer of 2005, she worked at the Champion's Edge Elite Camp and has been involved with the United States Field Hockey Association's high school open camps in previous years.
A 1997 graduate of Providence College, where she earned a degree in social science, Schanne was named to the All-Big East Second Team as a junior and was a named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 1995. At the conclusion of her senior season with the Friars, during which she served as a team captain, she was selected to play in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game.
