OXFORD, Ohio - After leading the RedHawks to their first Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance, Miami University's head women's basketball coach, Maria Fantanarosa, signed a contract extension through the 2013-14 season, Miami Athletics Director Brad Bates announced today.
"Maria has led our program to two championships in the last five years as well as our first NCAA Tournament appearance. Her students grow, develop and graduate as leaders in our communities," said Bates. "Her staff contributes to our culture in meaningful and engaging ways. As an alum, Maria represents Miami with a unique passion and love that inspires us all. We look forward to her continued leadership and are very excited about her commitment to this great university."
Fantanarosa led Miami to a 23-10 record this past season, the program's sixth 20-win season and first since the 2003-04 campaign. Miami's 23 wins are the second most wins in school history, just one win behind the 1981-82 squad that posted a school record 24 wins. Fantanarosa surpassed Pam Wettig as the winningest head coach in program history on Dec. 30, 2006 winning her 132nd game at the helm of her alma mater. Fantanarosa's overall record at Miami is 161-133.
"I appreciate Miami's confidence in my leadership. Having the opportunity to lead the women's basketball program that I played in is something I appreciate every day," Fantanarosa said.
"I look forward to continuing to work with exceptional student-athletes and staff at Miami and carry on the tradition of graduating our student-athletes, while winning championships," Fantanarosa ended.
