• 2003-04 Nonconference schedule
OXFORD, Ohio -Miami University head women's basketball coach Maria Fantanarosa has announced a challenging 2003-04 nonconference schedule that she expects to challenge her team while continuing to raise the profile of RedHawk women's basketball. Headlining the schedule are three opponents that competed in last season's NCAA Tournament and three others that competed in the 2003 WNIT.
"I think this year's schedule shows our commitment to challenging the team with a difficult preseason schedule," Fantanarosa said. "Our players believe in the philosophy that you'll only get better by playing better teams. While I have great respect for all of the programs we'll play, I'm also confident that we can be very competitive and successful during this portion of our schedule."
The 2003-04 schedule tips off on Nov. 15 when Miami faces the University of Michigan in the first round of the prestigious Preseason WNIT. Miami, which is making its first Preseason WNIT appearance since 1997, could advance to play the winner of 2003 NCAA Qualifiers Cincinnati and Liberty with a defeat of the Wolverines.
On Nov. 21, Miami travels to Virginia Tech for its first-ever meeting with the Hokies. An NCAA Tournament qualifier a year ago, Virginia Tech posted 22 wins during the 2002-03 campaign. Miami makes its home debut on Nov. 24 when it clashes with 2003 WNIT participant Saint Louis for the second straight season.
The RedHawks longest trip of the season takes place over Dec. 6-7, when it travels to the University of California at Berkeley for the Oakland Tribune Classic, which also features 2003 NCAA Tournament qualifier Tulane and Utah State. Over the next three weeks, Miami returns to Millett Hall for a four-game homestand that includes a Dec. 13 meeting with Butler University, a Dec. 20 clash with the University of Kentucky, a Dec. 28 date with the University of Portland and a Dec. 30 contest with Valparaiso, a 2003 NCAA Tournament qualifier.
Miami concludes the nonconference portion of its schedule on Jan. 2, when it travels to Missouri for its first-ever clash with the Tigers, who won 17 games and competed in the WNIT in 2003.
