ATLANTA -Miami University senior guard Heather Cusick (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) received arguably the most prestigious honor of a stellar career recently when she was selected as one of 48 players in NCAA Division I women's basketball to be named a finalist for Kodak All-America honors, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Eastman Kodak.
WBCA member coaches in each of the eight WBCA geographical districts vote for the team and player of the year. The 12-member Division I Kodak Women's All-American Basketball team will be announced in Atlanta, Ga., at Georgia Tech's Alexander Memorial Coliseum on April 4, 2003 at 4 p.m. in conjunction with the NCAA's Women's Final Four.
Cusick, who earned the honor by being selected to the WBCA Region 4 team, is the first Miami player in 20 years and only the second in program history to earn the privilege, joining Linda Mallender (1982-85), who was a third-team Kodak All-American in 1983. Joining Cusick on the Region 4 team were fellow Mid-American Conference competitors Tamara Bowie (Ball State) and Kristen Koetsier (Western Michigan), along with Conference USA selections Chandi Jones (Houston), Teana McKiver (Tulane) and Debbie Merrill (Cincinnati).
A 5-foot-8 guard, Cusick led Miami in points, assists and steals per game, while earning first-team all-MAC honors and finishing second in voting for the 2003 MAC Player of the Year award. The MAC Player of the Year in 2002, Cusick finished her Miami career as the RedHawks' career leader in points (1,728), field goals (604) assists (596), 3-point field goals (230) and 20-point games (32) while ranking second all-time with 307 steals. She's the only player in MAC women's basketball history to achieve all of the following milestones: 1,700 points, 500 assists, 400 rebounds, 300 steals and 200 3-pointers.
"Heather has had a great career at Miami and has really helped elevate our program," head coach Maria Fantanarosa said. "This is one more honor in a long line of awards that have reflected Heather's hard work and dedication throughout her career."
Miami earned its first MAC East Division Championship this season, posting a 17-12 record and 11-5 league mark. The RedHawks also advanced to their third straight MAC Semifinal.
