CLEVELAND -For the second consecutive season, Miami University women's basketball standout Heather Cusick (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) has earned her place among the Mid-American Conference's elite, garnering first-team all-MAC honors along with Ball State's Tamara Bowie, Toledo's Tia Davis-a former high school teammate of Cusick's-and Kristin Koetsier and Casey Rost of Western Michigan.
Cusick, the defending MAC Player of the Year, averaged 16.1 points per game to rank third in the league behind Bowie (20.7 ppg) and Rost (19.6 ppg) in scoring. The senior guard also ranked fourth in the league in assists (5.0 apg) and second in steals (3.2 spg). Over the course of the season, Cusick totaled 23 double-digit scoring performances, including six 20-point efforts. She opened the season with a career-high 36 points in Miami's upset of Michigan State on Nov. 24 and earned MVP honors at the Spartan Chevrolet Classic.
One of the most prolific players in the history of the Miami women's basketball program, Cusick became Miami's all-time leader in points (1,710), field goals (598) and 3-point field goals (227) during the season and will finish her career owning seven of the 15 career records tracked by the Miami Athletic Media Relations Office. She is ranked among Miami's career Top Five in four other categories, including second in steals (302).
Cusick also has ranked herself high in the MAC Record Books, ranking among the league's Top 15 in scoring, Top 10 in assists and steals and Top Five in 3-point field goals. One of the most well-rounded players in the history of the league, she is the only player in MAC history to achieve all of the following milestones: 1,700 points, 500 assists, 400 rebounds, 300 steals and 200 3-point field goals.
With the honor, Cusick becomes the first player in Miami history to be named first-team all-MAC multiple times in her career. The senior, who was an honorable mention all-league selection as a freshman and sophomore, also is the only player in Miami history to earn some form of all-MAC recognition in each of her four seasons.
Cusick leads her Miami RedHawks in to MAC Quarterfinal action Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., when the second-seeded Red and White clashes with seventh-seeded Eastern Michigan in Cleveland's Gund Arena.
