CLEVELAND-In the midst of arguably the best all-around season of any player in Miami University women's basketball history, junior guard Heather Cusick was honored by the Mid-American Conference coaches today when she became just the sixth player in Miami history to earn first-team all-MAC recognition.
Cusick, an honorable mention all-MAC selection in each of her first two seasons, ranks among the MAC's Top 10 in eight of 12 major statistical categories this season and leads the league in scoring (17.6 ppg) and steals (2.9 spg). The junior, who became Miami's career assist leader with six dishes in last Saturday's first-round tournament defeat of Akron, ranked second in the league in overall assists (5.8 apg) and dished out more assists than any other player in MAC games.
In terms of Miami single-season standards, Cusick, who has 71 3-point field goals to date, has already broken Miami's records for 3-pointers made and attempted. She currently is enjoying the third-highest scoring season in Miami history, needing 30 points to match Mary Ann Myers' 21-year old record (524) and just six points to become the second Miami player to clear 500 points in a season. The Kokomo, Ind., native also is just five dishes away from matching Miami's single-season assist record (167).
Joining Cusick on the all-MAC first team are Tamara Bowie from Ball State, Kristin Koetsier of Western Michigan, Kate Miller from Kent State and Stephanie Smiley of Eastern Michigan. Cusick is the first Miami player to earn first-team status since all-time leading scorer Monica Niemann achieved the feat in 1995.
