CLEVELAND, Ohio-After an impressive week in which she averaged 22.5 points per game and guided Miami University's women's basketball team to victories over Ball State and the Buffalo, RedHawk sophomore Cindi Merrill (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) has been honored as the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Merrill, who established a Miami single-season record with her fourth MAC East Player of the Week honor, helped the Red and White put the finishing touches on its first MAC Championship in 14 years while extending its winning streak to 12 games. The honor is the eighth in the past 10 weeks for Miami, which has not lost since Jan. 14 and has been victorious in 16-of-18 games since Christmas.
Versus Ball State last Wednesday, Merrill poured in 17 second-half points to help Miami break open a close game and end a three-game losing streak versus the Cardinals with a 75-65 win. She finished with 25 points and nine rebounds, while converting a career-high 10 free throws on the night. Merrill set the tone in the RedHawks 98-71 defeat of Buffalo, pouring in 20 points, including 15 in the first half, and contributing six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Merrill previously earned the honor on Dec. 1, Jan. 12 and Feb. 16 and is one of four RedHawks to be named MAC East Player of the Week this season. A candidate for all-MAC honors, Merrill averages 14.2 ppg to rank second on the team in scoring. Since the beginning of league play, she has averaged 15.3 ppg to rank third in the MAC. She has a team-high eight 20-point games this season and has surpassed 20 points in four of her last six games.
Miami (20-6, 14-1 MAC) closes out the regular season at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Kent State University. The only team to defeat Miami in MAC play this season, the Golden Flashes own the MAC's second-longest winning streak at seven games.
