OXFORD, Ohio (Feb. 21) -- For the second consecutive year, Miami University's women's basketball team will be hosting a first round Mid-American Conference Tournament game after defeating Marshall University 85-73 Wednesday night in Millett Hall. The tourney begins Saturday, March 3.

Despite opening the game making only three of its first 14 shots, Miami jumped out to a 25-10 lead, following a 19-4 run midway through the first half.

Shots began to fall for Miami as it drained 63 percent from the field the rest of the half and entered the locker room with a 39-26 advantage.

For the half, the RedHawks committed only six turnovers and scored 12 points off nine Thundering Herd miscues.

In the second half, Marshall began with a quick 16-7 run to pull within four points (46-42) with 14:02 remaining.

After exchanging baskets for the next 11 minutes, Miami pulled away in the final minutes, making 3-of-4 free throws in the final two minutes to secure the victory.

For the first time this season, Miami had six players reach double digits in scoring. Heather Cusick paced the RedHawks with 20 points, including 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Cusick also dished out a game-high five assists and pulled down seven rebounds.

Jana Butler and Beth Roederer both pitched in 11 points for Miami, while Melanie Kozlowski, Jenny Martin and Kelli Stamper each hit for 10 points apiece. Colleen Day grabbed a team-high eight boards.

Yashico Stevens tallied 20 points to lead Marshall and Catie Knable added 17 markers.

Miami is back in action on Saturday, February 24, as it hosts Akron at noon. The game will air on FOX Sports Net Ohio.

Game Notes: For only the fourth time this season, the RedHawks out-rebounded their opponent. Miami finished with 43 rebounds compared to Marshalls 30 ... Miami is now 8-2 at home on the year and have won five straight in Millett Hall ... Cusick finished with one steal and has now recorded at least one steal in 33 straight games.
