OXFORD, Ohio-In the midst of a breakout season, Miami University women's basketball standout Colleen Day (Independence, Ohio/Holy Name) was honored today by becoming the first Miami player named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV Women's Basketball Team since 1995.
Day, a third-team selection, was one of just 15 NCAA Division I players and two sophomores in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee to gain a position on the team. She is the first Miami player to receive the recognition since Lisa Kovack earned third-team status in 1995 and just the second Miami player to earn Verizon Academic All-District plaudits. The 6-foot forward is one of six Mid-American Conference players receiving recognition.
A starting forward for the Red and White, Day is one of just two Miami players to start all 24 games this season. She currently ranks third on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) and first in rebounding (7.0 ppg). The sophomore, who has established new career highs in every statistical category this season, has four double-doubles and ranks third in the MAC in steals. Her 28-point effort versus Ohio University on Jan. 12 was the highest scoring output of any Miami player this season. Day is an English Education major with a 3.81 grade point average.
To be nominated for Verizon Academic All-District recognition, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and carry a minimum grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
