CLEVELAND -For the second time in her career, Miami University junior forward Colleen Day (Independence, Ohio/Holy Name) has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Day, who shares the honor with Marshall University's Catie Knable, led Miami to its first back-to-back road wins versus the MAC West Division since 1997-98. In a 70-64 win at Northern Illinois last Thursday, Day poured in 17 points, including three key second-half 3-point field goals. Day's final 3-pointer came with one minute remaining in the contest and Miami protecting a razor-thin one-point advantage.
Versus Bowling Green, Day tallied her second 20-point effort of the season by pouring in 21 points in the 75-65 victory. The junior hit 7-of-7 free throws on the day, including four in the final 1:17 that put the game out of reach. Day also grabbed eight rebounds, closing to within just three of 500 for her career. For the week, the junior shot 59 percent from the floor and drained 9-of-9 free throws. She presently ranks fifth in the MAC in free throw percentage (.855) and ninth in rebounding (6.7 rpg).
Day, who last earned the honor after tallying a career-high 28 points last year at Ohio, is just the second RedHawk this season to be named MAC Player of the Week. She was honored as the league's scholar-athlete of the week on Dec. 9. Miami (12-10; 7-4 MAC) currently stands one game behind MAC East leader Kent State University, which it faces at 4 p.m. Sunday in a game broadcast by Fox Sports Ohio.
