KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Feb. 17) - Despite a career-high 21 points from sophomore Beth Roederer, Miami University's women's basketball team came up short against Western Michigan, falling 80-74 Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo.

Miami got off to a sluggish start as the Broncos jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. The RedHawks crept back into the game following a three-point assault midway through the first frame. Miami drained seven first-half treys, including a Melanie Kozlowski three-pointer at the 4:03 mark, which gave the RedHawks their first lead at 35-33.

However, Western Michigan held the Red and White scoreless for the next three minutes and regained the lead. The Broncos entered the half with a 44-37 advantage.

For the half, Miami shot an impressive 58 percent from three-point land and 40 percent overall. In the mean time, Western Michigan drilled 55 percent of its shots, which was aided by Karen Duerloo. Duerloos hit 5-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-8 free throws, ending the half with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Hollie Nelsen hit two consecutive three-pointers to open the second half, bringing Miami to within 44-43. Once again, Western Michigan weathered the storm and extended its lead to 65-55 with 7:50 remaining in the contest.

Miami embarked on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 67-67, but the Broncos regained the lead for good as Sarah Hurrle connected on two free throws, ending any Miami hopes for a comeback.

Roederer hit 8-of-15 shots en route to her career-best scoring game. Hollie Nelsen added 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Jenny Martin dished out a career-high seven assists.

The RedHawks hit 11 three-pointers for the game, one short of its season high, and finished the game shooting 43 percent overall.

Duerloo led all scorers for Western Michigan with 31 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Miami (13-10, 7-6 MAC) returns home on Wednesday to battle with Marshall. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Millett Hall.

Game Notes: Heather Cusick, who was 0-for-11 on the day, finished with two steals and extending her streak to consecutive games with at least one steal to 32 ... Miami was out-rebounded 42-28 in the game ... Kim Lancaster, a candidate for MAC Freshman of the Year, was sick and played only 15 minutes, scoring four points and grabbing three boards.
