OXFORD, Ohio (Feb. 12) -- Miami University's women's basketball team held Bowling Green to just 2-of-16 shooting from three-point range and defeated the Falcons 88-61 Monday night in Millett Hall. With the win, Miami improved to 6-5 in Mid-American Conference action and 12-9 overall, while the Falcons dropped to 5-7 in the MAC and 9-14 overall.
The RedHawks, who entered the game with the best three-point defense in conference play, controlled the usually-outstanding Bowling Green three-point attack, which came into Millett with the third-best overall percentage from behind the arc.
Despite making only one of its first eight shots, Miami jumped out to a 15-10 lead at the 10:06 mark. After falling behind 8-3 early on, the RedHawks embarked on a 12-2 run to give them the five-point advantage.
However, the Falcons soared their way back into contest and eventually took a 28-27 lead with 4:25 remaining in the first frame as Francine Miller and Dana Western both connected on three-pointers.
Miami held off the Bowling Green spurt and entered the half with a 39-34 lead.
For the half, Miami shot 42 percent compared to Bowling Green's 43 percent, but both teams struggled from the three-point line. The RedHawks shot just 2-of-9 while the Falcons drained only 2-of-11 from behind the arc.
In the second half, Miami took control of the game early and never relinquished it. The RedHawks, following a 25-6 run, took a 68-46 lead with 8:05 remaining in the game. The advantage stretched to 27 points by the time the buzzer sounded.
Kim Lancaster (Sharonville, Ohio/Princeton) led all scorers with 19 points, which was the third straight game she has been tops on the squad in scoring. Lancaster connected on 7-of-10 free throw attempts. Heather Cusick (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) added 18 points, including four three-pointers, and a game-high seven assists, marking the fourth straight game with at least seven assists.
Jenny Martin (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) (14), Jana Butler (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty-Benton) (10) and Kelli Stamper (Frankfort, Ky./Lexington Catholic) (10) all hit in double digits for Miami, while Butler added a game-best nine boards. Stamper hit all five of her shots.
Pam Brown led all Bowling Green scorers with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Francine Miller added 11 points, six boards and five assists.
Game Notes: Cusick finished with three steals and extended her streak of consecutive contests with at least one steal to 30 games ... Miami was out-rebounded 41-35, marking the 19th time in 21 games it has been outdueled on the glass ... Angie Farmer, who entered the game with the best three-point percentage in the MAC, finished the game 0-for-3 from behind the arc ... Hollie Nelsen made both foul shots she attempted and has now connected on 35 of her last 39 attempts (90 percent) ... Miami committed only 11 turnovers while forcing 22 Falcon miscues.
