OXFORD, Ohio - Miami looks to continue its recent strong play when it hosts Western Michigan Saturday in Mid-American Conference action. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Millett Hall.
OSBORN PASSES 400: With 19 points against Ball State Wednesday, freshman point guard Courtney Osborn (Fishers, Ind.) has now scored 404 points on the season. She is only 29 points from passing Kim Lancaster’s 2000-01 freshman single-season record of 432 points. If Osborn is able to keep up her current pace, this season could end up being one of the top-10 individual performances in Miami history. Current assistant coach Colleen Day currently holds the 10th-best single-season scoring mark in Miami history with 465 points during her senior year of 2003-04. The best individual season in RedHawk history came during the 2007-08 campaign when Amanda Jackson put in 712 points. Osborn already does rank tied for 10th single-season in three-pointers made with 59.
FREE THROWS CONTINUE TO GO IN: Miami is now 316-for-415 on its free throws for the year, a percentage of 76.1 percent. In its last five games, the RedHawks have hit 81.9 percent (68-for-83) of their free throws. Miami’s single season best free throw percentage was 76.9 percent, set during the 1989-90 season. Currently the RedHawks rank 14th in the nation in free throw percentage.
ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN: The Broncos are 6-16 overall and 1-8 in the MAC. They ended a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 52-47 victory over Ohio at home in Kalamazoo. Western Michigan is led by sophomore forward Miame Giden. She leads the team with 15.0 points per game. Right behind her is junior forward Ebony Cleary. She averages 12.2 points and leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game. The Broncos have struggled offensively in conference play as they score only 51.4 points per game, fewest in the MAC.
SERIES HISTORY: Miami leads the all-time series with Western Michigan, 31-22. Last season in Kalamazoo, the RedHawks gained their third straight win against the Broncos, 69-63 on Feb. 4, 2009. Jenna Schone led the RedHawks with 22 points as Miami overcame a 27-18 deficit to pull out the win.
UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: The RedHawks hit the road next week for two contests, traveling to Eastern Michigan on Feb. 10 for a 7 p.m. game and continuing on to Kent State on Feb. 13 for a 2 p.m. start.
