    KENT, Ohio (Jan. 17) - Miami University's women's basketball team came within seconds of upsetting Kent State University before falling short and dropping a 71-69 decision Wednesday night (Jan. 17) at the M.A.C. Center. With the win, the Golden Flashes extended its 38-game home winning streak, which is currently tied for the best in the nation.

    Miami had a six-point lead (58-52) with 10:04 remaining in the game as Hollie Nelsen connected on a free throw. However, Kent State fought back with a 14-7 run, gaining a 67-66 advantage with 2:22 to go in the contest.

    With 39 seconds left in the game, Julie Studer drilled a layup to tie the game at 69-69. The RedHawks had possession with 10 seconds to go, but Heather Cusick came up short on a jumper and inadvertently fouled Golden Flash center Andrea Csaszar.

    Csaszar drilled both foul shots at the nine-second mark and Miami could not get off a last-second shot as time expired.

    For the game, Miami shot just 21 percent from three-point land and 36 percent overall. Kent State managed to connect on 41 percent from the field and 84 percent from the line.

    Miami and Kent State fought to a 36-36 halftime tie as Melanie Kozlowski buried a three pointer with 15 seconds left to equal the score.

    Jenny Martin finished the game with a team-best 14 points, while Heather Cusick added 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Nelsen also hit for 11 points, including two three-point field goals, for Miami.

    Studer finished the game with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead Kent State. Carrie Nance added 16 markers for the Golden Flashes.

    Miami (8-7, 2-3 MAC) is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20, as it travels to Northern Illinois to take on the Huskies. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST.

    Game Notes: Cusick finished with one steal, giving her at least one in 24 consecutive games ... Nelsen has now connected on 20 of her last 23 foul shots (87 percent) ... Beth Roederer tallied one assist in the contest, pushing her streak to 15 games with an assist.
