OXFORD, Ohio-For the second consecutive week and fourth time this season, a member of Miami's women's basketball team has been honored as the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week. Sophomore Colleen Day (Independence, Ohio/Holy Name) earned the honor for the second time this season after averaging 21.5 points per game in RedHawk defeats of Akron and Ohio.
In last Wednesday's 103-67 defeat of Akron, Day played a season-low 27 minutes but still responded with 15 points, seven rebounds and a season-high five assists. The sophomore hit 6-of-13 shots from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the 3-point arc, as Miami tallied its highest point total in 20 years.
Versus Ohio, Day was all but unstoppable, pouring in a career-high 28 points off 11-of-13 shooting from the field, while snaring a game-high five steals in the 89-73 win. Day's 28 points marked the highest point total by any Miami player this season. For the week, Day averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game.
Day, who previously was named the MAC's East Division Player of the Week on Dec. 17, leads the MAC in field goal percentage (.603), while ranking third in steals (2.4 spg), fifth in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and 11th in scoring (13.9 ppg). Her 128 field goal attempts are the fewest of anyone ranked among the MAC's Top 15 in scoring.
Day joins Heather Cusick (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) as the second Miami player to earn the honor twice this season. Under head coach Maria Fantanarosa's direction, Miami has produced 17 MAC players and scholar-athletes of the week over the past four seasons.
Miami, 10-5 overall and 4-0 in the MAC, puts its unblemished MAC record on the line at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts MAC East favorite Kent State University.
