AKRON, Ohio (Jan. 10) -- Miami University's women's basketball recorded its first Mid-American Conference win of the year as it defeated Akron 64-52 Wednesday night at the JAR Arena.
In a seesaw first half, Miami committed 12 turnovers and shot just 35 percent from the field, while Akron also coughed up 12 miscues and shot 38 percent from the field.
The RedHawks trailed 30-26 with three seconds remaining in the first half, but Melanie Kozlowski put back a missed shot, pulling Miami to within 30-28 at the half.
In the second half, the RedHawks came out focused and fired up, racing to 46-35 advantage with 11:35 to go in the game. Kim Lancaster, who was limited to just three scoreless minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, connected on a three-point play to give Miami that lead.
Akron closed the gap to six points (58-52), but Jenny Martin, Heather Cusick and Jana Butler all tallied shots in the last minute to finish the scoring and secure Miami's first MAC win of the season.
Martin led Miami, which only committed four second-half turnovers, in scoring. She finished with a game-high 20 points. Lancaster also hit for 13 points.
Jamie Scott and Jamie Krivak each tallied double digits for Akron, scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Miami (7-6, 1-2) returns home on Jan. 13 to face Central Michigan. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
Game notes: Cusick had two steals in the contests, marking the 22nd consecutive game with a steal ... Beth Roederer dished out one assist, giving her at least one assist in each game this year ... Miami finished the game shooting 89 percent from the foul line (16-of-18), which was a season high ... the win upped Miami's record to 9-0 all-time when playing in Akron.
