Portland, Ore. - Hampered by cold shooting from beyond the arc, Miami women's basketball fell in its season opener Friday night, falling to the University of Portland, 74-61.
In the first five minutes of the game, the Pilots opened up a 10 point lead, 13-3, and never looked back. The biggest
lead of the night for the Pilots came with less than a minute left in the first half with a 42-21 lead. At the half the
Pilots led 42-25. Senior Tami Standish had 13 first half points on 6-10 shooting.
The second was led the entire way by the Pilots with the Redhawks making a strong effort and getting to within
six points at 63-57, but the Pilots held off the Miami charge. The Miami charge was led by Colleen Day who
scored all 12 of her points in the second half, she also had 12 rebounds on the night for a double-double. The
Redhawks also had three players score in double digits with Beth Roederer and Day with 12 points and Jana
Butler with 10.
Senior center Allison Asher and sophomore forward O'Rielly-Williams each had two blocks for the Pilots. Of
O'Rielly-Williams 12 rebounds, seven were offensive. Guards Trish Felts and Hanna Seltzer each contributed nine
points off the bench for the Pilots.
Miami concludes its trip to the Pacific Northwest Sunday at 4 p.m. (EST) when it faces the University of Oregon.
