Head Coach Maria Fantanarosa

Maria Fantanarosa, a former Miami women's basketball standout, enters her third season at the helm of the Miami women's basketball program.

In her second season, Fantanarosa guided the RedHawks to an 16-12 record, including a 9-7 mark in the conference and a second-place finish in the East Division, and the Red and Whites first winning season since 1996-97.

A two-time all-Mid-American Conference selection, Fantanarosa finished her career in fourth place and currently ranks ninth on Miami's all-time scoring list with 1,086 points. As team captain her senior year, she recorded 125 assists to move into third place in the Miami record book with 323 career assists; she currently ranks sixth.

"The strong commitment of support to a competitive athletics program by President James Garland and athletic director Joel Maturi makes it an exciting time to be at Miami," said Fantanarosa. "I chose Miami as a student-athlete because of its academic reputation, beautiful campus, great facilities and strong basketball tradition, and I consider it a great privilege to be a part of it again as a coach."

Fantanarosa, 34, came to Miami from Western Carolina, where she served as head coach in 1997-98. She led the Catamounts to a 7-20 record, earning more wins than either of her two predecessors were able to achieve in their first year. Under Fantanarosas tutelage, guard April Fleck became only the second Catamount in the programs history to be named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.

Prior to Western Carolina, Fantanarosa was the top assistant at South Carolina for three seasons. Before her work with the Gamecocks, she was the number one assistant at Xavier, where the Musketeers won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular season title in 1991-92 and the conference tournament title in 1992-93. Xavier posted a 74-41 record during her tenure.

While at Miami, Fantanarosa has produced nine MAC Player's of the Week, including one MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week. She has also done an excellent job of bringing in quality high schools athletes as her two recruiting classes have been ranked in the top 75 in the Blue Star Report and 42nd in the All-Star Report.

A native of Kulpmont, Pa., Fantanarosa earned her bachelor's degree in speech communication with a minor in coaching science from Miami in 1990 and a masters degree in sport administration from Xavier University in 1993. She is married to Tim Morrow, also a Miami graduate.
During her prep career at Mt. Carmel Area High School, Fantanarosa set Pennsylvania state records for most points in a career by a male or female (3,823), most points in a single season (1,319) and most points in a freshman varsity season (886).
