CLEVELAND -- For the second straight year, Miami placed a league-high three runners on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Cross Country Team, the league announced this week. Pat Sovacool, Paul Krebs and Kevin Silver were among the 11 selected in a vote of the league's faculty athletic representatives.
The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. The remaining student-athletes have been recognized as Academic Honorable Mention selections.
"These young men embody the very best of Miami University, where you can get a national-class education and compete in a nationally-competitive athletic program at the same time," Head Coach Warren Mandrell said. "All three of these athletes were All-Mid American Conference selectees on the athletic side also, proving that at Miami, academic success and athletic performance can go hand in hand. It is truly amazing that members of our team can run 10 or more miles a day, some of it at an excruciatingly-painful pace, week after week, through heat, rain, wind, and snow, and still have the energy and dedication to excel in the classroom. They are very special guys."
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
This is the third such honor for Sovacool, a senior who holds a 3.59 grade-point average in Zoology. He made the Academic All-MAC Academic Team in Cross Country in both 2006 and 2007 as well, earning the honor in all three years he was eligible. On the race course, he was a two-time All-Great Lakes Region selection and advanced to the NCAA Championships twice.

Miami had two additional athletes who were named Academic Honorable Mention: Ryan Dezso and Adam Martin.
