WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Senior Pat Sovacool (Lakewood, Ohio) finished 12th at the NCAA Great Lakes Region Cross Country meet Saturday to earn one of the individual spots at the national championship later this month. As a team, Miami finished ninth and will not advance to that portion of the competition.

Sovacool ran the 10K course in 31:46.6, just 40 seconds behind the winner. He guaranteed his spot by being the fourth runner not on an automatic qualifying team (Wisconsin and Michigan). Sovacool also was named all-region by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association by finishing in the top 25.

"We struggled a little with the mud today," Head Coach Warren Mandrell said. "Both Pat and Kevin (Silver) are milers and take longer strides, which has better results in drier conditions. But we ran a solid race as a team. Pat handled the race well."

Junior Kevin Silver (Beachwood) was 33rd overall in a time of 32:16.3, while sophomore Michael Perry (Cincinnati) ran one of his better races of the year (32:51.5) to finish 64th. Junior Paul Krebs (Kettering) was two spots back in 66th at 32:55.4 and senior Brad Untrauer (McCordsville, Ind.) placed 82nd with a time of 33:19.0.

Freshman Chris Dennison of Aurora, Ohio (85th at 33:27.1) and junior Ryan Dezso of Copley, Ohio (130th at 34:34.9) also ran the race, but did not figure into the top-five scoring format.
