OXFORD, Ohio - After a runner-up finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships season ago, the Miami University men's cross country team has been picked to finish second in the conference's preseason poll as voted on by the league's head coaches.
Led by head coach Warren Mandrell, who is entering his 15th season as the RedHawk's mentor, the RedHawks return all but one letterwinner from the 2007 squad, including Pat Sovacool, who finished fourth at the conference championships and qualified for the NCAA Championship. Mandrell's Miami squads have finished first, second or third at the MAC Championships in 11 of the last 12 seasons.
Also returning for Miami are Brad Untrauer, Kevin Silver, Michael Perry and Paul Krebs. Untrauer took eighth at the MAC Championships in 2007, while Silver was 15th and Perry took 16th. Krebs ended in 28th place at last year's championships.
Last year's champion, Eastern Michigan, was picked to win the MAC, while Central Michigan and Kent State tied for third in the preseason poll.
The RedHawks are currently training for the 2008 season, running more than ten miles per-day, six to seven days per week. They will keep up that training until the two days before their season-opening competition, the Dayton 5K Challenge in Kettering on Aug. 30.
