OXFORD, Ohio--Once again it was an impressive effort in the classroom for Miami University student-athletes during the 2009 fall semester, as a total of 505 individuals cumulatively averaged more than a "B" average.
Together, the RedHawk athletes had a 3.04 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). During the 2009 spring semester, Miami's student-athletes averaged an equally impressive 3.05 GPA.
Twelve of MU's student-athletes produced perfect 4.0 grade point averages while 23 percent of the men and women athletes made the honor role with at least a 3.0 GPA. Two out of every three individuals--67 percent--earned at least one "A" on their fall semester report cards.
Among those who qualified for the RedHawks' "Straight A Team" with perfect 4.0 averages were swimming's Ellen Barhorst (West Chester, middle childhood education major), track and field's Brittney Bernardoni (Batavia, Ill., exercise science), football's Austin Boucher (Kettering, business economics), volleyball's Jenna Caylor (Dayton, French education), track and field's David Eichenberger (Plainfield, Ind., exercise science), track and field's Laura Gehret (Anna, life science), volleyball's Hallie Hanks (Chagrin Falls, accountancy), basketball's Rachael Hencke (Grafton, Wis., exercise science), swimming's Miranda Kaltenborn (Memphis, Tenn., psychology), track & field's Paul Krebs (Kettering, zoology), football's Seth Philip (Columbus, accountancy) and swimming's Leah Thornton (Helena, Ala., undeclared).

The team that made the greatest GPA improvement from one semester to the next was Coach Dan Simonds's baseball squad, rising from a 2.63 cumulative GPA last spring to a 2.97 average this past fall.
For athletic director Brad Bates, the consistent storyline of the academic success of Miami's student-athletes is inspiring.
"I hope our constituents do not let the annual redundancy of our students' high achievement dilute the significance of their distinction as they continue to intellectually thrive within the rigors of Miami's prestigious curriculum," said Bates. "This success comes immediately following a year that produced the greatest number of championships in school history. Miami is a unique, national story and we are extremely proud of our students, and the coaches, faculty and staff who are sincerely devoted to their development as future leaders in our global society."
