The Miami University men's cross country team ended the 2002 season with a strong third place finish at the 2002 Mid-American Conference Championships on Western Campus Course behind Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan who rank eighth and seventh in the national poll, respectively.
Junior Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) and sophomore David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) earned second-team all-MAC honors with their eight and ninth place finishes out of 99 MAC runners. Padgett and Mitchell's times of 24:36.60 and 24:37.80 would have placed them second and third all-time on the Western Campus Course before today's race. Both runners ran personal record times.
Senior Adam Cross (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) and senior Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) barely missed second-team all-MAC honors with 13th and 14th place finishes. Cross and Claunch ran the fifth and sixth fastest times on Miami's course before today's race. Cross finished with a personal best time of 24:52.30 and Claunch crossed the line with a Western Campus Course best time of 24:53.40.
Ryan Clark (Eaton, OH/Eaton) also ran a fast time of 25:19.00, which was good enough for 26th place, to round out Miami's top five finishers.

The Eagles' Gavin Thompson won the individual MAC crown with the fastest time in MAC history and fastest time in Western Campus Course history of 23:50.20. Eastern Michigan's reigning NCAA champion Boaz Cheboiywo finished in 16th place do to a course direction mix-up.
