BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Pat Sovacool finished 26th and was one of three RedHawks to place in the top 30 as the Miami University men's cross country team finished fourth Saturday at the 2006 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championship.
At a rainy and muddy 8K course at Beaver Island State Park, Sovacool paced Miami with a 26th-place time of 28:52. Battling through temperatures in the low 40's and steady winds of 20-30 mph, Sovacool finished two minutes behind race winner Corey Nowitzke of Eastern Michigan (26:52).
Freshman Paul Krebs and redshirt freshman Kevin Silver joined Sovacool in the meet's top 30 finishers, as they placed 27th and 30th, respectively. Krebs clocked in at 28:52, while Silver was 11 seconds behind him at 29:03. Both runners turned in strong performances in their first career MAC meet.
Placing as the fourth Miamian was junior Justin Campbell, as he turned in a 35th-place time of 29:46. Behind Campbell, junior Michael Veatch rounded out Miami's scoring five with a 36th-place time of 29:29. It was Campbell's third straight top-40 finish at the MAC meet and Veatch's second straight conference scoring finish.
Eastern Michigan (23 points) took home the team title, as it placed five runners in the meet's top 10. Eastern Michigan finished 41 points in front of second-place Central Michigan (64), while Kent State (72), Miami (144) and Ohio (148) rounded out the top five. Akron (156), Buffalo (163), Bowling Green (208) and Toledo (256) placed sixth through ninth, respectively.
With its fourth-place finish, Miami placed in the top four at the conference meet for the 11th straight season. Since 1980, Miami has finished in the MAC's top four in 19-of-26 seasons.
