OXFORD, Ohio - Running against some of the top programs in the nation, the Miami University men's cross country team finished 13th out of 25 teams and had five RedHawks finish in personal-record times at the Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
Despite the five PR's, Miami head coach Warren Mandrell was not necessarily excited about the team's finish.
"It was not a particularly great race for us. It is not what we had hoped for," said the Miami mentor. "Five of our guys did run their personal bests, but we would have liked to have seen more than that."
The RedHawks' 369 points was just ahead of the University of Arizona who ended in 14th place at 376. Four Great Lakes Region teams finished ahead of Miami in Butler (fifth), Notre Dame (T-sixth), Michigan (ninth), and Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan (10th). The RedHawks finished ahead of in-region opponents Illinois State (18th), Indiana State (19th), Michigan State (23rd), and Marquette (25th).
"It was an okay race against a really competitive field," Mandrell continued. "The field went out really hard and that was a little bit of a shock to our guys."
Pat Sovacool finished a team-best 29th with a time of 24:20. Kevin Silver ran a personal-best of 24:38, good for 53rd place. Paul Krebs also ran a personal-best at 25:02 and finished 94th, while Michael Perry took 95th at 25:03.
Chris Dennison ended in a personal-best of 25:01 and took 102nd. Robbie Fisher was another RedHawk that PR'ed with a time of 25:11 and took 106th. Ryan Dezso rounded out the personal-bests for Miami with a time of 25:18, finishing 118th.
Brad Untrauer finished in an uncharacteristic eighth-place finish on the team, taking 124th with a time of 25:22. Adam Martin ended in 25:46, good for 25:46.
Mandrell explained why some of the RedHawks may have fallen off their usual pace.
"The course also had a lot of curves and narrow passes. Our guys got knocked around a little bit and got out of their rhythm instead of just relaxing and running their race."
Miami will look to rebound when the RedHawks travel to another tough competition in the Pre-NCAA Invitational at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 18 with the race beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
