KETTERING, Ohio - The Miami men’s cross country team opened its 2009 season with a second-place finish at the Dayton Flyer 5K Invitational Saturday morning at Indian Riffle Park, finishing behind host Dayton. The RedHawks, who finished with 34 points, had won the race each of the last six years.

Redshirt senior Kevin Silver (Beachwood, Ohio), who took third at last year’s race, paced the RedHawks crossing the finish line in fourth place in a time of 15:12. Miami then claimed places seven through 13, led by senior Paul Krebs (Kettering, Ohio), who ran in his hometown and finished seventh for a second straight year, in a time of 15:18.

“We ran a really good race, we just kind of ran out of time. With the race being a 5K (rather than the usual 8K), we were just getting started and didn’t have time to make up the ground,” head coach Warren Mandrell said. “We had a team-best time at this meet, but Dayton had the best team they’ve ever had. We tried to move our pack through the field, but came up just short.”

Redshirt sophomore Brian Gallagher (Westlake, Ohio), running in his first race as a RedHawk after transferring from Ohio State, took eighth overall as Miami’s third finisher just a second behind Krebs, while junior Robbie Fisher (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) followed in ninth and fellow junior Michael Perry (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed 10th to complete the ’Hawks’ scoring five. Freshman Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) and redshirt freshman David Eichenberger (Plainfield, Ind.) rounded out Miami’s top seven with 11th- and 12th-place finishes, respectively, in times of 15:29 and 15:30 in their first races wearing the red and white.

Following Dayton (23 points) and Miami in the Division I results were IUPUI, Morehead State and Wright State, respectively. Wayne State won the Intercollegiate Division with 40 points.

The RedHawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 19, in Bronx, N.Y. at the Iona Meet of Champions.
