DAYTON, Ohio--Junior Pat Sovacool (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) set a meet record as Miami University's men's cross country team opened its 2007 season by winning the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge on Saturday afternoon. Sovacool clocked a time of 15:02 en route to a first-place finish to propel the RedHawks to their fifth straight win at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge.
In addition to Sovacool, the RedHawks had four other runners place among the top 10. Senior Michael Veatch (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and sophomore Kevin Silver (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) recorded third- and fourth-place finishes, each in a time of 15:23, while freshman Michael Perry (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) finished fifth in a time of 15:26. Junior Brad Untrauer (McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) crossed the finish line in 15:41 to post a ninth-place finish.
Behind a team score of 22 points, Miami bested its nearest opponent by a solid margin as host Dayton scored 44 points to place second. Cincinnati, Xavier, Morehead State and Wright State rounded out the team finishes, respectively.
