KENT, Ohio - Although Miami's men's track and field team does not begin its outdoor season until late March, several RedHawks competed indoors unattached at Kent State University's Golden Flash Gala Friday and Saturday.
Senior Jordan Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) broke the school record in the heptathlon at the meet, totaling 5,421 points, finishing in second place out of 19 participants, behind only Ohio State's Heath Nickles. He broke current assistant coach and former RedHawk standout Ceith Creekmur's mark of 5,399 points set in 2006. Goffena performed especially well in the 60m hurdles portion of the heptathlon, winning in 8.22 seconds, just one one-hundredth of a second off his personal best, while he was second in the long jump, matching his personal best with a jump of 23-4.5/7.12m, which he first set outdoors.
Former RedHawk Michael McCarty ('11) was third in the heptathlon with 5,377 points while senior Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) took fifth with a personal-best 5,088 points, led by a career-best pole vault of 17-00.75/5.20m, which ranks him fifth in school history. Freshman Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) also competed in the heptathlon and placed ninth with 4,577 points.
Junior John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) participated at the Golden Flash Gala as well in the jumps. He took fifth out of 27 in the triple jump with an indoor personal-best leap of 45-3.75/13.81m and tied for sixth out of 29 in the long jump with a mark of 21-6/6.55m.
The RedHawks are allowed to compete in three indoor meets as a team per NCAA rules and begin outdoor season March 23-24 at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational.
